TAMPA - The budget likely is a fraction of that for Cheap Trick's "Sgt. Pepper's" spectacle, but four local bands are taking on an equally ambitious task Saturday.

The Ditchflowers, Rebekah Pulley & the Reluctant Prophets, Four Star Riot and The Vodkanauts will perform The Beatles eponymous 1968 release better known as "The White Album." The show is sponsored by listener-supported radio station WMNF, 88.5 FM.

Saturday is the 40th anniversary of the release of "The White Album."

The bands will each perform one of the album's four vinyl sides, although The Vodkanauts will hand over Side Four's "Revolution 9" to sonic experimentalist Ray "Rayzilla" Villadonga.

"It will be an electronic-performance art piece," WMNF music director Lee "Flee" Courtney says. "He'll have megaphones, audience participation. It's probably as much effort as a whole side of the album."

WMNF has sponsored several band tribute shows over the years, including a Beatles event in 2002. This is the first album tribute show, though.

"It's great because nobody sits down and listens to a whole album anymore," Courtney says. "And it's easier for me because I don't have to round up 20 bands."

Besides "The White Album," the show also will feature George Fuller III, Lance Rowland and Mark Carufel each performing songs recorded for but left off "The White Album," such as Paul McCartney's "Junk," George Harrison's "Not Guilty" and John Lennon's "Child of Nature," which later became "Jealous Guy."

The evening will close with a "Hey Jude" sing-along, featuring "all the performers, or as many people as are still there."

Courtney promises to debut some of his own recordings between sets.

"I've made CDs of surface noise to play between sides," he quips. "It's very relaxing."
