In The Mood For A Movie?

Published: November 27, 2008

Don't want to stay home and watch the winless Detroit Lions play their traditional Thanksgiving Day football game? Perhaps a local theater is the place for your annual post-turkey nap - or a little romance, action or comedy.

New movies always come out early this time of year, hoping to take advantage of an extra day or two of weekend box-office dollars. If you're thinking about spending some of yours to enjoy the big screen, here are your new-release options:

Four Christmases

Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) are a couple who always avoid family holidays by getting out of town. But when their flight out of the country is canceled, they end up having to visit four homes - both their parents have remarried.

They end up getting the usual dose of passive aggressiveness, brotherly hostility and baby vomit. The latest in a string of romantic comedies for the holidays. 82 minutes. (PG-13, some sexual humor and language)

Transporter 3

Now you see what you've gone and done? So many of you went to see "Transporter" and "Transporter 2" that they've gone and made a third one. Luc Besson (director of "The Fifth Element," of fond memory) co-wrote this film, which once again stars tough-guy Jason Statham as Frank "I'll give you five seconds to remove your hand" Martin.

This time, he's hired by a criminal mastermind to deliver a mysterious package. And he can't bail on the job because if he gets 75 feet away from his Audi, he'll blow up. 100 minutes. (PG-13, sequences of intense action and violence, some sexual content and drug material)

Australia

When Baz Luhrmann directs a film, you know you're going to get two things: stunning visuals and lots of romance. Both are on display in this film, which is set in Australia just before World War II and continues through the Japanese attack on the country.

Nicole Kidman is an English aristocrat who has inherited Australian property, and Hugh Jackman is the tough stockman she hires to help her stop a hostile takeover of her ranch. Romantic complications ensue. 165 minutes. (PG-13, some violence, a scene of sensuality and brief strong language)
