Published: October 7, 2008

System: Xbox 360

Also available on: Nintedo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3

Publisher: Capcom

Reviewer's rating: ***

ESRB rating: Everyone

Game type: 2-D Platform

Kind of like: "Super Mario Bros." with a gun

Best feature: It's just like playing one of the old 8-bit "Mega Man" games, but it's new.

Worst feature: "Hard" doesn't begin to describe it.

The bottom line: Capcom's brand new "old game" really puts a spin on the concept of retrogaming.

"Mega Man 9" is an all-new Mega Man game. Amazingly, it's a new game created in the style of the original 8-bit "Mega Man" adventures, graphics and all.

And that includes the insane difficulty.

This is old-school action at its finest. If you play this game, available for download on Xbox Live Arcade and other systems, you'll swear you're looking at an old Nintendo Entertainment System game or something. Even the music sounds like it came straight from 1987.

As Mega Man, you jump around from platform to platform through 8-bit worlds, trying to defeat eight enemy robots who have gone berserk. Before you can get to these enemies, with such names as Tornado Man, Magma Man and Splash Woman, you have to cross through their areas, which include some of the most difficult shooting and jumping that you'll find. Hopefully, you won't mind the challenge, because that's what every "Mega Man" game has been all about.

Each of the eight boss robots gives you a new gun you can use when you defeat him or her. Also, each robot is especially vulnerable to a different gun. Figuring out which weapon to use on which enemy robot is part of the challenge.

Fortunately, since the game is so hard, you can save your progress.
