The Happening **
If Mark Wahlberg can pass for a science teacher, and audiences can forget "Lady in the Water," then perhaps incredulity can be stretched even farther to accommodate M. Night Shyamalan's latest plotline, a murky tale of mass suicides, urban flight and eco-disaster. The good news is that he is now working with an R rating, which means he can be melodramatic and gross.
R, 91 minutes
The Visitor
Veteran character actor Richard Jenkins - you'd recognize his droopy face, if not his name - stars as a bored, middle-aged professor whose life gets a little more exciting when he discovers a pair of exotic squatters in his Manhattan apartment. The plot eventually takes a political turn but the emphasis remains on the people and their relationships.
PG-13, 103 minutes
You Don't Mess with the Zohan ***
Like many Adam Sandler vehicles, this one is probably best enjoyed in the condensed form of a commercial. Nonetheless, you may find yourself unable to resist the deep silliness of the setup, in which Sandler plays a superstar Mossad agent who fakes his own death to take up a new life as a celebrity hairdresser in Manhattan.
PG-13, 113 minutes
