Public Lands Day/Coastal Clean-Up tomorrow

National Public Lands Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27 and the day is set aside for volunteers to celebrate and clean up local public land.

Hernando County offers four sites for National Public Lands Day and Coastal Clean-Up for volunteers to pick up trash, collect native seeds and add walkway mulch to a butterfly garden. All of these activities occur on public lands that are managed by Hernando County Environmentally Sensitive Lands, Southwest Florida Water Management District or Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. After the work is done plan to celebrate with an after party with lunch, drinks and a thank you ceremony.

Community sponsors for NPLD are the Hernando Audubon Society, the Hernando Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society, and the Hernando County Tourist Development Council.

The day will start at 8 a.m. - Meet at public land site. 8:05 to 11 a.m. - Site introduction and work activity; 11 a.m. to noon - Finish work, gather materials and car pool to after party; noon to 1 p.m. - After party with lunch and drinks at Bud McKethan City Park, off U.S. 41 in Brooksville in front of the Quarry Golf Course.

•Peck Sink, 17240 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville. Meet in SW corner parking lot of Brooksville Regional Hospital on State Road 50. Look for Hernando County truck. Activity: Trash and debris collection at Sink, talk on Peck Sink and hike to site before and during work with Hernando County Environmentally Sensitive Lands manager. Bring water bottle with water, gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, 5- gallon bucket, wear closed toe shoes, long pants. No amenities.

•Weeki Wachee Preserve, (SWFWMD), 2121 Osowaw Blvd., Spring Hill. Less than ¼ mile south of West Hernando County Transfer Station on U.S. 19. Activity: Collect native plant seeds. Identification of native plants given before work with SWFWMD staff. Bring water bottle with water, gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen. Wear closed toe shoes, long pants. No amenities.

•Chassahowitzka, WMA-Weeki Wachee Tract (FWC). West of U.S. 19 and S.R. 50 on County Road 550-A. Meet at parking area west of intersection U.S. 19 and S.R. 50 off C.R. 550-A. Activity: Trash and debris collection. Hike in area no longer open to general public with FWC biologist. Bring water bottle with water, gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen, 5-gallon bucket. Wear closed toe shoes, long pants. No amenities.

Chinsegut Nature Center, North Hernando County, 23212 Lake Lindsey Road, Brooksville, north of Brooksville on U.S. 41. West at C.R. 476 or Lake Lindsey Road. Activity: Add mulch to walkway for new butterfly garden. Garden talk before work activity with University of Florida and IFAS staff. Bring water bottle with water, gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen. Wear closed toe shoes, long pants. Amenities available.
