Dog Lovers Rejoice Over New Dog Park

Published: January 25, 2009

Mark your calendars: As of Jan. 31, Hernando County residents will be able to enjoy the County's first public dog park.

Rotary Centennial Park will have a grand opening ceremony at the first phase of the park, on Jan. 31 and the park will be open to the public and their pooches starting at noon with a variety of activities for all. The park is located at 10375 Sandlor St., Spring Hill.

It has been a long time coming and it was worth the wait. Finally, residents will not have to drive out of county for outdoor time with their dogs. Through the effort of the Hernando County Commissioners, the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department and the Spring Hill Central Rotary Club, families can now enjoy a day in the park with their dogs.

This phase of the park includes separate play runs for small, medium and large dogs. There is also a separate area for dogs on leashes. As all good pet parents know, poop scooping is a must, of course. What a fun and exciting day this will be with plenty of fresh air and exercise for all.

The creation of this park would not have been possible without the efforts of the Spring Hill Central Rotary Club. Through various fundraisers and solicitations of sponsors the funds were raised to make this park a reality for our community. The major contributors to this project were Black Rock Construction Services of Florida, Inc., Cemex, Inc. (formerly Rinker Materials), D.A.B. Constructors, Inc., Forest Oaks Civic Association, Home Depot Inc., Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, Leadership Hernando Class of 2008, Publix Supermarkets, Inc., Zachry Construction, Flagstone Pavers, Inc., and of course the Hernando County Parks and Recreation Department.

For anyone who has not driven by yet, I encourage you to do so. This is a beautiful park that had a great deal of forethought in the planning. It will be a true asset to our community as well as the neighborhood surrounding it. What a great opportunity for socialization for both people and pets. Hopefully this will be just one of many facilities where families and their pets can enjoy the weather and the camaraderie of others.

There are currently two pet friendly events in the community parks - the Soggy Doggie Days at Pine Island and the Nature Coast Pet Expo at Tom Varn Park in Brooksville. Both of these events are limited to specific times and dates. The Rotary Centennial Park will be open all day every day based on scheduled park hours. No matter what schedule residents work, there is now a park that will be available for them to play with their dogs.

On behalf of all the dogs and their families throughout the county, "Woof, woof, woof" (thank you, thank you, thank you).
