BROOKSVILLE - The Humane Society of the Nature Coast (HSNC) will be hosting the fifth annual Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22 at Tom Varn Park, 275 Darby Lane, in Brooksville.

This annual event will feature pet contests and games, local and breed specific animal rescue groups, food and vendors. And... this year the Bow Wow Bake Sale has been added to tempt the human attendees.

The Pet Expo is a perfect opportunity to visit with local rescue groups of the Tampa Bay area and see if the love of your life is waiting for you. This year there is a special reason to attend.
HSNC is No. 5 in the Zootoo Semi-Finals

On Saturday during the Expo, the Humane Society will receive a special visit from Zootoo.com founder and CEO, Richard Thompson at 12:30 p.m. at Tom Varn Park. Thompson will address the community before interviewing shelter staff and conducting a shelter tour as a part of Phase II of the $1 Million Shelter Makeover Competition.

Community support is an essential part of Phase II and is critical to ensure that the shelter gets to the finals of the makeover contest. Zootoo conducts visits to the top 20 shelters to assure themselves that the public will help their community shelter through a large renovation project. Zootoo.com will announce the top ten shelters on April 7 in Las Vegas. Voting for Phase III begins on April 13 and ends on April 19. The shelter with the most votes will receive a $1 million shelter makeover.

The HSNC is asking the community to show their support by attending the Zootoo Pep Rally at Tom Varn Park from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pet Expo.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for HSNC and the community," said Michele Curtis, President of the HSNC Board of Directors. "Bring your posters and signs and help us get to that next phase."

The Expo will feature live entertainment both days by local country/rock singer Mitch Cain. Mitch will also be featured at the Hernando County Fair and has performed with local country entertainers, Brian Chytka and George Marshall. Of course, no Pet Expo would be complete without a performance by the Non-Breeders and their original pet tunes.

Come for the rally and come for the contests: Best Dressed Pet, Famous Pet Look-A-Like, Pet/People Look-A-Like, Best Kisser and the Longest Tail contests will be conducted throughout the weekend.

All pets are welcome at this event as long as they keep their owner on a leash. For more information, call 796-2711, e-mail joanne@humanerescue.org or visit or visit www.humanerescue.org.

The Humane Society of the Nature Coast is a no time-limit, no-kill shelter serving Hernando County and the Tampa Bay area and is a member of the Coalition for Animal Welfare of West Central Florida.
