One of the perks of losing "American Idol" is not having to sing the obligatory song written for the winner.
This year's song, "No Boundaries," co-written by "Idol" Judge Kara DioGuardi is exceptionally bland and boring. It's available on iTunes now if anyone is interested.
Both finalists, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, had to perform it on the elimination round. It was painful to watch. Lambert, a natural-born rocker, almost choked on the mushy lyrics. Ditto for Allen. Simon refused to comment on the song. And even DioGuardi urged viewers not to judge the contestants on that song.
DioGaurdi wrote it with Cathy Dennis and Mitch Allan. It took three people to come up with arguably the worst "Idol" song ever. With references to achieving your dreams by going higher and deeper because there are no boundaries it appears they rewrote the message from "Climb Every Mountain" (out of "The Sound of Music").
This forced gimmick, known as the "coronation song," has failed to produce memorable music but some songs have faired better than others just by the sheer power of the exposure on "Idol." The winner could perform lyrics taken from fortune cookies and still sell a million copies.
David Cook's "Time of My Life" went gold and was picked up by NBC as a theme song used during the Summer Olympics.
The equally forgettable "This is My Now," selected for "Idol" winner Jordin Sparks in an amateur writing contest, peaked at 15 on Billboard's Top 100.
But who didn't groan and cover the ears when Taylor Hicks performed his coronation song "Do I Make You Proud?" - to which the answer is always "No!" And this was the only release from Hicks that went gold.
We won't know if "No Boundaries" hurt Lambert or Allen. But it could be DioGuardi's swan song. The least popular of the judges could have used a hit to give her more credibility.
