'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra'
By all accounts, action figures could have outperformed the cast of this live-action cartoon. On the other hand, lots of stuff gets exploded real good and there are women in leather (Rachel Nichols and Sienna Miller) and men with bulging biceps (Channing Tatum et al). Christopher Eccleston is the villainous madman who wants to destroy the world, because madmen never have hobbies. Also someone insulted his Scottish clan long ago, so Kaboom! PG-13, 118 minutes
'I Love You, Beth Cooper'
The set-up is this: during his valedictory speech at their high school graduation, super nerd Denis (Paul Rust) confesses his love for the eponymous Beth (Hayden Panettiere) who happens to be the most popular girl in their class. (In a shocking twist, Beth is also a cheerleader!) Director Chris Columbus, who sucked the magic out of the first two Harry Potter movies, performs a similar service for less sparkling source material here. PG-13, 102 minutes
'The Taking of Pelham 123'
The title refers to a subway train that leaves a station in the Bronx at 1:23 p.m., only to fall into the hands of hijackers led by John Travolta. The lead good guy is Denzel Washington's transit executive, who gets the obligatory list-of-demands call. Tony Scott directs this sleek, shiny remake of the 1974 thriller, from which Quentin Tarantino was accused of cribbing for his own heist flick, "Reservoir Dogs." R, 106 minutes
