When Sheena Parveen makes her Tampa television debut on Saturday, she will become the second female meteorologist to work at WTVT, Channel 13.
"This is a great opportunity because the station has state-of-the-art equipment, and I'm coming back home," says the St. Petersburg native, who has been working off-camera this week.
"Florida is where I want to be," she says. "I'm so picky about it that I didn't apply anywhere outside of the state."
Parveen says she grew up watching the weather forecasts on Tampa area television stations. "I've been fascinated by the weather most of my life," she says. She says she went to Florida State University because it has an exceptional meteorology program.
Fox 13, which has a rich history of pioneering television meteorology, had only one female forecaster before Parveen - Theresa Varga, who worked at the station in the early 1990s.
Parveen, 23, will be forecasting for the Saturday and Sunday morning newscasts.
The recent retirement of meteorologist Howard Shapiro resulted in staff changes. WTVT meteorologist Jim Weber replaced Shapiro on the noon newscasts. Longtime weekend meteorologist Andy Johnson will move from weekend morning newscasts to weekend evening newscasts.
Since graduating from FSU in 2008, Parveen has been working at WCTV-TV in Tallahassee under her real name, Sheena Samanipour.
"I decided to use my middle name, 'Parveen,' now because Samanipour may be difficult for viewers to read on the screen, and it is not easy to pronounce," she says.
While at Florida State, Parveen was host of the "FSU Weather Show," which was carried on cable television in Tallahassee. She also hosted a weekend cooking segment on WCTV.
JFK REMEMBERED: Sunday marks the 46th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
"JFK: The Ruby Connection," at 9 p.m. Sunday on Discovery, is a dramatic staging of the Nov. 24, 1963, shooting of Kennedy assassin Lee Harvey Oswald by Jack Ruby at the actual Dallas police station garage. Discovery uses vintage cameras and lights to illustrate minute-by-minute who was standing where and why.
At 11 p.m., Discovery shows "Did the Mob Kill JFK?" It features a new interview with a "secret FBI informant" and links organized crime and CIA and attempts to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro to the assassination.
At 9 p.m. Monday, "The Lost JFK Tapes: The Assassination," debuts on the National Geographic Channel. Using rarely seen archival footage that has been digitally restored, it re-creates a detailed timeline of events that day.
VIDBITS: TV theme songs have just about disappeared, so it's no surprise that the top 20 themes in a recent AOL poll go back a few decades. The theme from "Gilligan's Island" was picked as the all-time favorite, followed by the "Happy Days" theme. For a complete list, see Walt TV on TBO.com.
