Florida Orchestra plans shows across Bay area in October

The Tampa Bay Steel Orchestra will perform on Halloween in St. Pete and Nov. 1 in Clearwater.

The Florida Orchestra has a full slate of concerts planned for this month, from Latin fusion to symphonic dances to steel drums and pops.

Here's some of what listeners have to look forward to.

RHYTHMS ON FIRE

Just before the cooler weather heads south, the Florida Orchestra will host a hot night of Latin-inspired music. Cuban-born classical guitarist Manuel Barrueco and bandoneon master Daniel Binelli will perform tango master Astor Piazzolla's Double Concerto for Guitar and Bandoneon. Marquez's Danzon No. 2, De Falla's El Amor Brujo with contralto Jennifer Hines and Revueltas' La Noche de los Mayas complete the program.

POPS IN THE PARK

Guest conductor Gerald Steichen will perform a mix of symphonic and pops, featuring the works of Rossini, Bizet, Gould, Copland, Williams, Hoagy Carmichael, Tchaikovsky and more.

When and where: 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at River Tower Park, Sulphur Springs; 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Vinoy Park, St. Petersburg

How much: Free

SYMPHONIC DANCES

With annotations about the composers and music, Alastair Willis will conduct this Coffee Concert which features the works of Bernstein, Copland, Saint-Saens, Stravinsky, Verdi, De Falla and Tchaikovsky.

When and where: 11 a.m. Oct. 29 at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg

THE TAMPA BAY STEEL ORCHESTRA

Principal Percussionist John Shaw joins the Tampa Bay Steel Orchestra, with vocalist Fred Johnson, to summon the island spirit of Harry Belafonte and Bob Marley for a night of steel drum hits.

When and where: 8 p.m. Oct. 31 at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg; 7:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater
