There's all over the place and then there's all over the place with GPS. "Fits" starts out in a post-punk alleyway and glides through breezy pop and white soul among other stops on its 12-song journey.
That there's any coherence at all is down to the production's low-fi buzz and the talents of this Austin, Texas, trio - Josh Block, Steve Terebeki and James Petrali. It's a case of short attention spans working to a band's advantage. "Fits" never stays in one place long enough to get boring.

THE LIST

Johnny Cash's daughter was 18 years old when he gave her a list of 100 "essential" songs that he felt were vital to her musical genealogy.
Rosanne has harvested 12 songs from her master list and released them on her latest disc, a mix of early folk and modern country standards - including a bluesy rendition of "Motherless Children."
Highlights include guests Elvis Costello on "Heartaches By The Number," Wilco's Jeff Tweedy on "Long Black Veil" and Rufus Wainwright on Merle Haggard's "Silver Wings."

BEBEL GILBERTO:
ALL IN ONE
(VERVE) ***
As the daughter of legendary Brazilian bossa nova musician Joao Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto continues to blaze her own trail. Although the production is modern and meticulous, the music has an old-school feel. That's partly from the covers, which include Stevie Wonder's "The Real Thing" and her father's "Bim Bom." You don't have to know anything about Brazilian music to appreciate the sophistication of Gilberto's vocals (in English and Portuguese) or the gorgeous arrangements. The standout is the song "All In One," which mixes bossa nova and Beatlesque harmony. Turns out, that's a good thing.
