After a week of piling sand on top of sand on top of sand to hold back the Red River, which has risen to levels never seen before in North Dakota and Minnesota, there was cause for optimism on Saturday. The river, which had been rising last week at a rate of 3 feet a day, unexpectedly slowed down and even appeared, according to new National Weather Service predictions, to recede. ...more

For a change, it was rain, not pollen, falling from the sky in the Tampa Bay area Monday. The National Weather Service expected some places to get one-quarter to one-half inch. Even for places that got only one-tenth of an inch, it was the first measurable rain for more than three weeks. It also was the last likely shot at rain for at least the rest of the workweek because dry air will shuffle over the region starting today.
